CARE & MAINTENANCE
Thank you for choosing Edje Concrete. Every piece that leaves our Gold Coast studio is handcrafted with care, and we want yours to look and perform beautifully for years to come.
Concrete is a timeless material — much like marble or stone, it rewards a little mindfulness with lasting character and beauty.
About Your Concrete
All Edje Concrete pieces are sealed with premium-grade products before leaving our studio. While our sealers provide strong protection, concrete is a naturally porous material. Without proper care, it can scratch, discolour, or stain.
Variations in colour, tone, and texture are part of what makes each piece one of a kind. These are not flaws — they're the character of handcrafted concrete.
The First 30 Days
Your concrete sealer continues to cure and harden after installation. The first month is the most important for its long-term finish. During this period:
– Do not apply tape, sticky labels, or adhesives to the surface — removal can damage the sealer.
– Keep heavy or sharp tools off the surface to avoid scratches.
– Use only neutral-cure silicone. Acetic-cure silicone releases fumes that can degrade the sealer. Do not rest silicone tubes directly on the surface for the same reason.
– Remind all tradespeople that the surface is not a workbench.
Cleaning
For everyday cleaning, less is more.
Use:
– Warm water with a small amount of mild dish soap
– Gentle, natural cleaning products
– A soft microfibre cloth
– A soft brush for hard-to-reach areas like basins
Always rinse thoroughly and dry the surface after cleaning.
Avoid:
– Abrasive cleaners (Ajax, Jif, Gumption)
– Bleach, vinegar, nail polish remover, or other harsh chemicals
– Scrubbing pads or stiff brushes
– Any product that is strongly acidic or alkaline
If harsh substances make contact with the surface, rinse immediately with clean water.
Everyday Use
Concrete is tough — but a few simple habits will protect its finish and extend its life significantly.
– Always use a chopping board. Never cut directly on the surface.
– Use trivets, heat mats, or boards under hot cookware. Never place hot pots, pans, or baking trays directly on the surface.
– Lift and place items rather than dragging or sliding them.
– Wipe up spills promptly, especially anything acidic.
Watch out for:
– Staining agents: turmeric, lemon juice, and cooking oils
– Moisture trapped beneath items — soap dispensers, coffee machines, pot plants, and similar objects can cause discolouration over time. Use trays or stick-on feet to allow airflow underneath.
Heat
Concrete can be sensitive to sustained or high direct heat.
– Always use a heat-resistant trivet or board as a barrier.
– Do not place hot items directly on the surface — including hair straighteners or styling tools in bathroom settings.
Chips & Edges
Concrete is durable but, like stone, can chip at corners and edges if struck hard.
– Take care when handling heavy or sharp objects nearby.
– Avoid dropping items onto the surface.
– Minor chips can often be filled — contact us and we'll do our best to assist.
Integrated Sinks, Basins & Drain Features
Integrated concrete features require a little more attention to stay at their best.
– Use only gentle cleaners in and around the basin and waste area.
– Wipe away pooled water regularly to prevent discolouration.
– Do not drop heavy or sharp objects into the sink.
– Follow the same cleaning guidelines as above — no harsh or abrasive products.
Living with Concrete Over Time
Concrete develops a natural patina with age. Minor marks, subtle shifts in tone, and the occasional small scratch are part of its story — not a sign of failure. This is what separates a handcrafted surface from a manufactured one.
